Profile

Prof. Frederick Gravenir has more than 40 years of teaching. research, and higher education management experience in universities in Nigeria and Kenya. Over this period, he has painstakingly learnt the ropes entering the university system as a lecturer and eventually climbing the ladder to the positions of senior lecturer, associate professor and professor. He has been Head of Department (University of Ilorin, Nigeria & Maseno University, Kenya), Dean of Faculty (University of Ilorin, Nigeria & Maseno University, Kenya), Director, Institute of Open Learning, Director, Board of Postgraduate Studies, Director, Institute for Research and Development, Director, University Advancement, and lastly, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Outreach, all at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.

Professor Gravenir has accumulated considerable research experience over his active service in the university system. Firstly, he has published several scholarly papers and contributed chapters to books in the area of his discipline as well as participated in several local and international conferences. Secondly, as a researcher, Prof. Gravenir has performed exceptionally well by having competed for and won numerous research and capacity building grants, all in excess of US$1.4 million. These research grants have benefitted the universities (increasing research facilities, global visibility, universities collaboration); research teams (increased academic profile, money, international mobility); the research funder. Thirdly, Professor Gravenir has served as Editor-in-Chief of Ilorin Journal of Education, (University of Ilorin;1980-1987); Maseno Journal of Education, Arts & Science, (Maseno University;1993 – 1999); African Journal of Educational Studies, (Kenyatta University; 2004 to 2008).

On the community service front, Prof. Gravenir has served: as external examiner in universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda; member of Council, Kenya Education Staff Institute, (2006 to 2010); Board member, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, (2013 – 2019).

Prof. Gravenir is a recipient of Japan Foundation Research Fellowship (2005) and the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) Research Fellowship (2005) tenable in Japan and France respectively.
