Course Overview

The philosophy of the programme is to provide a comprehensive broad-based education that develops leaders, managers, academicians and other professionals in the field of public management to solve community, national and international public sector problems. This program aims at producing graduates with in-depth knowledge and grounding in the field of public sector management and administration. The goal is to equip them with skills and knowledge to enable them to respond aptly to administration, management, and leadership challenges ubiquitous, not in Kenya’s public sector, but across the continent of Africa.

Entry Qualifications

To be eligible for admission, the applicant must be a holder of one of the following:

• Passed with a mean grade of C+ or above in KCSE
OR
• A minimum of 2 principal passes in KACE (Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education) with a pass in the general paper.
OR
• A Diploma in Public Management, Diploma in Public Administration, Diploma in Business Management, Diploma in Procurement and Logistics, or Diploma in Supplies Management with at least a Credit pass from KNEC or an accredited institution recognized by TVETA and the University Senate,
OR
• Any other qualifications equivalent to (a) to (c) above, subject to approval by the Senate and meeting the minimum requirements set by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Duration & Structure Of The Programme

To be considered for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Public Management, a candidate is required to enroll and complete 48 units over a period of not less than nine (9) trimesters or equivalent offered in three calendar years. Each trimester is the equivalent of fifteen (15) weeks of study and each calendar year shall consist of three (3) trimesters. Based on individual preference a student can register for a maximum of seven (7) units per trimester. The minimum number of units a student can register per trimester is three (3) provided that all the required units are covered within five years. Normal duration for the degree shall be three calendar years and not more than six calendar years. Each candidate must satisfy the requirements of the common undergraduate courses as set by the University Senate. During each academic year, a candidate must satisfy the School of Business and Public Management requirements regarding the minimum number of units to be taken.

This program is taught using face-to-face student-lecturer interaction and both are required have a physical presence in the assigned classrooms for teaching and learning to take place. The coursework will be covered through the following approaches;

• Lectures and seminars,
• Group discussions and presentations,
• Case studies,
• Guest speakers and site visits.
