JOB OBJECTIVE

  • The job holder will be responsible for providing advice to the University in all matters that are legal in nature and ensure that the University operates within the required statutory and legal framework. The Head of Legal Services must possess a blend of legal expertise, strategic vision, and leadership skills tailored to the complex higher education environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Leadership and Management

  • Lead a legal team, ensuring high performance and professional development.
  • Implement legal technologies, case management systems, and tools for compliance monitoring.
  • Manage cybersecurity and digital governance issues affecting the University.
  • Participate in formulating university policies, contracts MOUS, rules, and regulations.
  • Keep custody of the University Seal, legal documents, original contracts, and agreements.
  • Represent the University in litigation and developing case strategy.
  • Prepare agreements and contracts for approval by the involved parties before signing to ensure that all the relevant information is captured as per legal requirements.
  • Technical Lead

  • Operate a broad range of legal areas, including contract law, compliance, data protection, intellectual property, employment law, governance, and laws and regulations specific to higher education (immigration, research ethics).
  • Provide legal advice aligned with the university’s mission, goals, and strategic priorities.
  • Manage legal risks and propose proactive solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree in Law or a closely related field from an accredited and recognized institution.
  • Diploma in the Advocates Training Program of the Kenya School of Law.
  • Member of Law Society of Kenya and in good standing
  • Practicing License from the Law Society of Kenya.
  • Certificate in Leadership and Management course.
  • At least 8 years of work experience, with 2 years working at a senior management level in a university or similar institution.

OTHER SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to navigate sensitive issues with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess complex situations and provide clear, actionable advice.
  • Effective crisis management and the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Skilled in negotiation and conflict resolution, particularly in contracts and dispute mediation.
